...the charming "Aujust" is a tribute to the classic "Stupid August" ("Aujust" in Berlin) of the golden circus era. Back then, his wonderfully clumsy manner ensured every laugh in the circus ring, but today he is an absolute rarity. His elaborately crafted coat was hand-colored in the Steiff manufactory with detailed circus animal motifs. As a result, each of these rare felt companions leaves the traditional manufactory in Giengen as an unmistakable one-off.

The best-known line is: "Old Mother Hubbard - went to the cupboard - to get her poor dog a bone." In this rhyme, Mother Hubbard goes to her cupboard to get her dog a bone - but the cupboard is empty. The character, particularly popular in England and America, often appeared in children's books, illustrations and also on toy motifs. WOW... When Steiff designed humorously characterized soccer figures around 1903, soccer was still a comparatively new sport in Germany - but one with rapidly growing enthusiasm. Young people and students in particular were discovering the game, which had originally come to Germany from England. Steiff recognized this trend early on and took up the theme with imaginative and humorous figures. Today, the characterized soccer players not only reflect the zeitgeist of early sports enthusiasm, but also show how attentively Steiff incorporated social developments into its play worlds....

...Around 1900, the teacher was still regarded as a person of great respect - strict, serious and often with clear authority in the classroom. This is precisely why Steiff's humorous teacher figurine was something very special. The characterized felt figure with its long limbs suddenly showed the "strict teacher" from a funny and lovable side. Steiff thus took up the everyday life of children in a humorous way and transformed an actually serious figure into an imaginative toy with lots of charm. These early character figures in particular enjoyed great popularity, as they humorously interpreted well-known figures from everyday life and thus gave children a lot of pleasure...

Steiff called this innovative mechanical series "self-propelled with movement".

... one of the first examples produced ... with the worldwide success of Walt Disney's "talkies", Mickey and Minnie Mouse conquered the cinemas from the late 1920s. The New York company George Borgfeldt & Co., which had also been Steiff's sole US importer for many years, took over the marketing of the famous mice. This happy coincidence led to a historic collaboration: between 1931 and 1936, Steiff produced around 53,000 Mickey Mouse figures in Giengen.

...The first "Minnie Mouse" first appeared in 1928 together with Mickey Mouse in the short film "Steamboat Willie". As a character, she has therefore been part of the Disney universe since 1928. However, the first commercial licensed products featuring Minnie Mouse only came onto the market a few years later - especially from around 1930/1931, when Minnie Mouse and Mickey were increasingly marketed worldwide. rare black Minky Zotty, produced 1968/1969, item no. 0303/35, 41 cm, in unused original condition, with breast shield, shiny black mohair, white breast mohair insert, clear airbrush in the snout, it is remarkable that this bear never officially went on sale, as the planned series production was not realized. This makes the "Minky Zotty" in this coloration one of the extremely rare Steiff variants that only exist in small numbers

... almost like from the Steiff children's book "Zotti the Bear" from 1966 by Menzel & Sengler, this dark Minky Zotty with a light-colored snout, which unfortunately never came onto the market, is reminiscent of the protagonist Zotti. Minky is a reference to the English word mink. The addition Minky stood for particularly fine and dense, silky, shiny mohair fabric.

cute sulphur man, item no. 114, produced in 1936, with button and yellow unused flag, no.: 114, felt head, large glass eyes looking sideways, clear airbrushing on the cheeks and grinning mouth, light airbrushing on the back of the hands, felt hat with polka dots, mottled mohair beard, loosely attached arms, swivel head, yellow felt slippers, H: 17 cm Condition: unplayed original condition

The humorous "sulphur man" only made a brief appearance in the Steiff range. Originally, the figure served as the mascot of a hotel in Bad Hindelang, known for the highest sulphur bath in Germany at the time. Within the development department, the original figurine pattern was inadvertently regarded as a free design idea and was subsequently put into production at Steiff. However, the craftswoman Charlotte Kirchhoff, who had created the original pattern, took legal action against the marketing, so that production had to be discontinued after a short time. This unusual story eventually developed into the well-known "lucky mushroom", which from then on delighted many children with its distinctive toadstool hat and became a popular figure in the Steiff range.

Welcome Monsieur Noir, The famous "Titanic Bear" is undoubtedly one of the special highlights of this year's Steiff Giengen Auction 2026. This rare example from 1913 is one of the legendary black mourning bears made by Steiff to commemorate the victims of the sinking of the RMS Titanic on April 14, 1912. Here in the 1913 shape with a Hug me voice. Item no. 5328.1 Only a few of these extraordinary mourning or black bears were made, making them one of the most important and rarest icons of early Steiff history. The "Titanic Bear" impressively combines contemporary history, rarity and emotional symbolism and is regarded by collectors worldwide as one of the most sought-after Steiff rarities of all. With expertise from the Steiff archive. Shoebutton eyes underlaid with red felt, black embroidered nose and claws, small STEIFF button, block letters, elongated f, long bent arms, hump, faults on the feet, produced from 1912-1917, 50 cm, some beautiful full black mohair, mohair loss on the snout and in small areas behind the ear and on the back, some loss of filling on the right arm, age-related faults on the paws, nose garnish rubbed the item is in the Swiss bonded warehouse, for bidders outside Switzerland shipping must be arranged, for import into the EU customs duty, VAT and handling fees apply, for bidders outside the EU the usual customs conditions apply there

... It is almost a minor miracle that the second of these rare black mourning bears from the same series is being auctioned again today. Perhaps they were already sitting next to each other in Giengen an der Brenz 114 years ago, at a time when the grief over the tragedy of the RMS Titanic moved the world and also found its silent expression in the Steiff house. Since then, decades of history have left their mark - loving hugs from children's hands, cherished years in collections and an extraordinary journey through time. Now, after many generations, "Monsieur Noir" is returning to the place where his story once began: to Giengen. May it also find an honorable home once again - a place where it is not only preserved as a rare rarity, but where it can live on as a silent companion and protective witness of the times for years to come ...
