Pia`s Blog: ,, ...The trousseau (French suitcase) was more than just a plaything. At the turn of the century, the "little ladies" of the upper class were supposed to learn how to pack for a trip in a playful way. Mignonettes often included suitcases with tiny hats, a change of clothes and umbrellas. From time to time, tiny brushes or perfume bottles were also part of such sets, which were often given as New Year's gifts (étrennes) to the children of the upper classes..."

This doll is indicative of the transition to the pinnacle of doll manufacture. Here, a new, large-scale material mix of a goatskin-covered wooden body with joints at the elbows and knees was combined with porcelain forearms with delicately shaped fingers and even hinted at fingernails. Gesland De Bébés Appreciation: A particularly finely modeled and exquisitely painted specimen with exceptionally beautifully executed lips and magnificent eyes

Pia`s Blog:,,...this doll marks an alliance of masters. The luxury specialty store A. Gesland joined an early Jumeau chassis with a head by François Gaultier. This body can be accurately dated to the coveted early phase from ca 1880 to 1882 due to the fixed wrists and eight loose ball joints. Adelaide Gesland ran an exclusive specialist store in Paris. She bought the best components (as here: Jumeau body & Gaultier head) and had them assembled according to her own extremely strict quality specifications. In late 19th century Paris, a Gesland doll was probably the most exclusive thing you could buy in the doll sector..."

Together with "Peter", it became the figurehead of the new character dolls, which were presented for the first time at the Leipzig Fair.
