This made the successful expedition of Richard Evelyn Byrd, an American naval officer and aviator, all the more celebrated. Steiff created the “CHINOOK, BYRD'S ARCTIC EXPEDITION” as a memento of Byrd's favorite polar dog. Without his faithful polar dogs, Byrd said, this expedition could never have succeeded. Only 2,493 of the faithful companion, lying down with elegantly crossed forelegs, were made.

Even if it was a tough battle to prevail over imitators. The golden-looking dog was produced by Steiff in many different forms. However, Steiff loses this battle. The samples sent to England did not correspond closely enough to the original, which was mainly marketed in books and other sales levels via licenses. Steiff immediately ceased production of the series. There are 7 sizes of the small dog in the Steiff archive; a total of 115 samples were produced. However, Paul Steiff did not give up completely. The “Cheerio”, a model of a puppy with an exaggerated sweet smiling face, was launched in 1929 and was remotely similar to the Bonzo pattern.
